Calvin Mathekga

Dancer

After completing my matric, I got chosen to become an assistant ballet teacher at Happy Feet Ballet in 2016.

The school’s principal saw potential in me before I could realise it. I became more passionate about ballet and my knowledge expanded tremendously in just a few months.

In 2017, I did my first international ballet examination at the Royal Academy of Dance located in London, and I acquired my Ballet Intermediate Vocational Level 3, European Qualification Framework.

In 2018, I danced a lead role at North-West Youth Ballet’s “The Sleeping Beauty Production” that took place at North West University, and later in the year we assisted in staging a successful “Into the woods” concert held at the Phokeng Civic Centre with an audience of at least 500 community members.

In 2019, I danced the lead role at the Happy Feet Ballet’s “Coppelia” production held at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.

In the period 2019-2021, I enrolled and completed my professional teaching certificate (Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies) at the Royal Academy of Dance, England.

As now the co-founder of Phokeng Dance Academy and with my 8 years of training and teaching, I learned the value of hard-work, dedication and believed that anything is possible.

This has instilled passion in me to reach out to my community and other rural communities to offer the same opportunities because there is so much talent and potential but less opportunities in dance.
